What are 3D-printed photos?

3D-printed photographs are actually called "Lithophanes". This term derives from the artistic method of "Lithography" where you treat a flat surface in certain areas to repel ink which results in a 2-tone effect. This process is very similar in it's 3 dimensional form, where the software we use analyses an image and identifies high and low points to create depth and convert a 2D image into 3D. This is then converted into a printable model. The effect remains hidden until you shine a bright, low temperature light behind the photo revealing the 3D image. It's like magic.....

The 3D photos are identical to and in some cases better than the original photo you submit to us.

As mentioned above, After we recieve your photo, we run it through specialist software that analyses the image and creates a 3 dimesional version. If the photo isn't great quality, we may run it through some AI enhancing software to provide a better starting point. We tailor to several different shapes such as flat panels, outer curves, inner curves, hearts and more. The default and most popular shape is the outer curve as pictured above as it is free standing and is aesthetically pleasing aswell as taking up only a small amout of room as opposed to a photo cube or lampshade design. Another extremely popular design is the moon lamp style where we impose your photograph on an actual 3D scan of the moon!

After we have processed your photo as a 3D model, we import it into our "slicer" software which allows us to modify the model in preparation for printing. We Print in small, medium or large and the sizes and pricing is pictured in the graphic below.
